I agree 100% Madame, I do a lot of work while visiting in Germany and have run into the same problem with the exchange rate.

The solution? As one of my friends said to me, "The EU is a terrible place to visit, but the perfect place to work for a professional." That is, make sure we get *paid* in Euros, not in the dollars. I work in computer programming and software design, and the smartest among my friends have been getting fluent in German-- which is useful even for those who stay in the USA, since German again is emerging as *the* technical language for sci/tech/engineering publishing-- and a large number are emigrating to Germany. They get paid in Euros there, much more money for better work hours, they raise their kids in a country with among the world's best schools and universities and they get those schools w/o going broke. Taxes are somewhat higher (but not that much higher than in the USA), and you actually get wonderful services for what you pay in there.

Obviously, anyone into other fields such as culinary arts, fashion or, well, just living well :) should be putting France, Italy or Belgium high on the list. I'm considering this, though I need to buff up on my French skills-- to emigrate, language skills really are the nub of things. (Though German will get you most places in the EUzone.) I would *not* go to the UK, since their indebtedness and failing banks signal a fall may be arriving there soon.

FWIW, some countries even have programs in place to attract immigration among their ethnic kin in North America, Australia and NZ. Italy does this for Italian-Americans, and Germany does it for the "Germania" peoples in North America, not just those of German heritage but also Dutch, Swedes, English, Norwegians, even Poles/Russians. (I've got the Italian part down, at least. ;) )

Well, just my two cents-- as in Euro cents, that is. ;) Good luck in tackling this yourself, Madame!
