I'm one of those people who has always loved going to school. School was a refuge from an unhappy life and a portal to better opportunities. The annual Fall exercise of buying school supplies was the harbinger of interesting things to come and totems of another, more satisfying world. And don't you love the feel of a pen with the perfect line width and inkflow gliding across paper with just the right satiny finish?
La rentrée may be September in France, but here in the US they start selling school supplies by late July. I love la saison des fournitures solaires because of the discounted specials and because there are also novelty items, like mini-school supplies that are difficult to find at other times of the year. These are perfect for traveling. Yes, I travel with a miniature 'desk' full of office supplies.
This school supply season is a disappointment: few novelty items, nothing new. So I'll have to stock up this Fall in Paris.
School supplies are another reason to love France, where people still use fountain pens. I adore fountain pens and enjoy browsing the huge selection available in Paris. But my number one favorite item to buy in France is the humble 3 x 5 card. There they make a graphed version with 5 squares per inch as opposed to the 4 squares per inch available in the US. And these are much more elegant than the clunky US squares. I'm a big fan of the Hipster PDA and use 3x5's for my daily to-do list, vocabulary flashcards and almost everything you can imagine.
