If you live in Northern California, did you feel the Napa quake? Are the aftershocks over? If so, it's time for French Earthquake Vocabulary!

earthquake = un tremblement de terre, un séisme

tremor = une secousse

aftershock = une réplique

tectonic plates = les plaques (f) tectoniques

collapse = effondrement (m), écroulement (m)

destruction = la distruction, l'anéantissement (m)

to crack (produce fissures) = lézarder*

to shake = trembler

a crack = une lézarde**

earthquake insurance = l'assurance (f) contre les tremblements

injury = une blessure

*note: isn't this a wonderful sounding word? Plus, it has another familiar meaning, to bask, lounge, laze around

**note: the masculine, un lézard, is a lizard

 

Now don't get me started on the drought (la sécheresse)!

Hi Tut. We do actually have "tremblements de terre" here, but only in Provence and in the Alsace regions. Right now it's the "innondations" (floods) people are having to deal with after a record year of rain. Wish we could share some of ours, though, despite having to submit to the mildew and th loss of half of our potatoes along with 100 tomato plants, it's wonderful for the rest of nature! cf Facebook page?
